Birthday Wishes from the Ancestors

A few years ago, I received this message from my ancestors when my birthday was approaching:

"Each year around your birthday your ancestors gather around you to bless you.

Each year is another triumph for them, and they come to give you many gifts and blessings.

Each year you've overcome challenges that you have persevered.

Each year is a blessing to be alive, and your ancestors love and support your journey.

For with each year, you are building upon another, and their legacy will continue.

Each birthday is a special one like the day you were born.

All that has created you gathers in celebration to remind you of who you are.

You were created with great love, and that love is within you.

You were made to love, and share that love with others.

Each year is an offering to expand, and grow deeper into love. Take your gifts and celebrate all that you are by giving back generously and openly.

Each year on your birthday is a point of remembrance that the world has gathered to celebrate your existence."

A Song for Water

Millions of raindrops coming from above
Clearing the way for all of us to love
Living, giving beings of crystal light
Returning to the earth to make things right.

Thank you raindrops.
Thank you water.
Thank you raindrops.
Thank you water!

Thank you water for all that you give us.
Thank you water for the life that fills us.
Thank you water for all that you give us.
Thank you water for the life that fills us.

Thank you water.
Thank you water.
Thank you water.
Thank you water.

Thank you water.
Thank you water.
Thank you water.
Thank you water.

Millions of raindrops coming from above
Clearing the way for all of us to love
Living, giving beings of crystal light
Returning to the earth to make things right.

Thank you raindrops.
Thank you water.
Thank you raindrops.
Thank you water!

Where Are You From?

"Where are you from?" the questioner asks.

“I am from my mother,” I answer.

“No,” the questioner states, “No, where are you from? Where are your parents from?”

“Oh my answer does not suffice?  Let me set you right.

As I stand before you, I do not know all that you ask.  My mother was adopted and based on retold stories, this is what I know.  My mother’s mother was Irish.  Her father may be a Romanian Gypsy Jew.  Or another story includes Polish too.

Now with my father, again, the truth is not so clear.  My father’s mother was from the mountains of China.  Her mother was a Chinese Gypsy.  Her father was dark skinned, known as black.  His origin is not solid as well.  We believe his roots traces back to some part of Africa.  As for my father’s father, he was born in a place known as B.C. The story is: he was French and First Nations as known as Metis.

So based on all of these, I am of my mother can’t you see.  My birth mother is a human being.
Therefore, I am a human being of Earth.

I stand before you of this Earth. Like my mother and father, I am the same as you.  I am a being of Mother Earth.

Does the answer fit your needs? If not, let me be.

I will continue to say this. I am of that called Mother Earth.  I am water. I am air. I am fire and I am earth: all the same of the Mother Earth.  I am the same as you.  I am a being of Earth.

Are you confused by my answer?

Let me further clarify and unearth the truth to satisfy you for what it’s worth.

After creating my ancestral tree which came before me are at my feet. I looked to my body. I am these hands of flesh. I am these feet as to where I stand.  I am the reflection that I see in your eyes as you look at me.  I am this voice, sometimes strong and sometimes weak.  I am solid therefore I am of this Earth.

I am from Mother Earth.  I am the same as you.

Based on my skin light olive to white; based on my eyes that shift from green, gold, and brown; based on my hair that curls when soaked, I am still from the Earth.

I am from all the colours of the indigenous wheel: Red, White, Black, and Yellow.  I am of all these, therefore I claim that I originate from the Earth.

At this time I will also say that my origin is of the day: the sun that lights my way.  I am also that of the night when darkness comes to steal my sight.

I am of the Earth rooted with my feet and breath. I am seeded here as you can see.  I remain with the fact that I am of Mother Earth. I am the same as thee.

My spirit is different than yours, could that be? Yet love is within you and me.

So different is not true, we are still the same, can’t you see.  I am from my mother.  I will call her, Mother Earth.

My Father is that of the sky which is within the sparkle of my eyes; all that is seen and unseen; all that is within me.  I am from that of which dreams.”

Dragonflies

Afternoon heat with sun's ray.
Dragonflies dances and sways.

Colours bounce from the flickering of wings.
They hum like the angels' sings.

Zigzag motions, highs and lows.
Why not dance with their lovely tones?

Sweetness from Above

Yesterday, I was walking along Dundas toward Jarvis, I noticed a white object in front of a red backdrop suspended in air.  At first I thought it was a spider that made its web over the middle of the road but there was nothing to attach the thread to.  It was too high in the sky.  I continued to walk along the street with my eyes gazing at the sky.  I almost bumped into two different people watching the object very slowly descend from above.  At one point, I thought I lost sight of it as it blended in with the white clouds.  I slowed my pace until I connected with it again.  Once I did I stood still and waited for it to come closer.  There it was, a small white down feather, floating toward me.  I reached out cupping my hand and this soft sweet gift from above landed in my palm.  I closed my hand I held it close to my lips and smiled.  I felt like I was kissed with golden love. I was pleased that I followed my curiosity as sweetness came to me in a gentle way.  I tucked it into my pocket and strolled down the street.  Unfortunately, throughout the day I did lose it BUT the moment was very precious for me, Such sweet blessings as I allow myself to be.

Daffodil's Cup

Mixed signs and signals when words are placed by the wayside.
Guessing and looking for clues when a direct approach is preferred.
Forging with one eye open and the other clouded with red dye.
Being honest with one’s heart clears the forest floor like a gust of wind.

An area of expertise would be greatly appreciated.

The appearance of objects scattered over the ocean’s surface drifting with currents.
The gravitational forces driving towards each other with impact of the unknown outcome faces them.
Steer wisely, one may ask using oars of daffodil's cup.
The gentle curves of the flower's face with wishes of a bright beginning and thus another day.

Precious Life

Precious life
starting out new
in the arms of a caregiver.

They teach us with
gentle and sweet kisses
tenderness and love.

This love - that awakens our spirit.

Creating a smile and a sense
of endless hope from within.

Hope that can shine
through the darkest of clouds.
Illustrations of light
containing multiple dimensions.

Opening of one’s soul can - change the world.

This world of everlasting relationships,
balancing on this fine thread of life.

Moments to give selflessly,
by giving completely.

Taken with cherished notions,
and deepening one’s compassion.

Pattern of Light

A vision on the street below,
a chain link of shadows
intertwining darkness and light.
The earth slowly turns
and the pattern change.
Still integrate,
yet it is
simply a reflection
of our mirror glass world.
It invites you to gazes,
to follow
the light's sudden movements.
Sound lowers to a gentle hum
as you get lost in live art.
Moving shapes from
squares to concaved figures.
These diamonds of light
reminding you to have faith
that everything is happening
the way it should.

What's Your Colours?

Expressing ourselves through colours,
a form of emotional truths,
rising from a person's heart.

Having substance beyond the sensing vision
their temperatures radiate at different levels,
you can feel them at any distance.

People never know their source
until they reflect on their inner colours.

Who Inspires You?

Many people inspire me and it just happens that I have a story to share.  This one is about a colleague who inspired me to write ‘Music as Sandpaper’, in my first chapbook entitled, Turning Pink, Published by A Beret Days Book - The Ontario Poetry Society, ISBN: 978-1-897497-61-6.
This was during a time, when I was a client service and portfolio administrator in a financial services company.  I just separated from a long term relationship and my self-esteem was extremely low, almost non-existent. It was difficult for me to go into the office because of my emotional and mental state. Anything that someone said either hurt or uplifted me.  I was sensitive with a capital S.
I changed my mood by singing or humming in the office.  Many people knew I was coming by their desks because of this.  Unfortunately, there was an office mentality of "us verse them", which I personally disliked. You’ve guess it; my area was known as the “dark side”. Yet, I knew, we all worked for the same company and we really needed each other there for it to run smoothly.
The mailroom as on the other side of the office and that's where I would be told I was from the ‘dark side.’  One colleague that I knew for years and respected as a person, started to use these phrases ‘how’s the dark side?’ or ‘why are you over here, shouldn’t you be back where you belong on the dark side?’  He was only joking, but I was extremely depressed about life.
One day, he said something about me being part of the ‘dark side’ and I was not in the mood to listen. I looked at him and stated, “it really hurts my feelings when you say, I’m from the dark side.”  I probably started to cry.
“Wow, you really are sensitive,” he seemed to be shocked.
No kidding, I was sensitive. I just didn’t need to hear people telling me that I’m from the ‘dark side’ anymore.  I knew it wasn’t true and I had to say something.  How would he know if I was hurting unless I told him?  When I finally spoke up it changed my relationship with him instantly.
He apologized and asked how he could make amends.  I responded by asking for chocolates or flowers.  He nodded and walked away.  Of course, I was still upset about it for a few days later because I was depressed and didn’t know how to let anything go.
One afternoon, I received an email, he told me to stop by his office because he had my chocolates.  What? He really did buy me chocolates.  I refused because I didn’t trust him.  That’s when he told me to relax because he really did buy them.
I ventured over from the imaginary barrier known as the crossing of darkness into light, where I expected to be tricked. I was pleasantly surprised because he did purchase a tasty selection of chocolates.  I was truly grateful that he went out of his way for me. We started to talk again as we did before, many years ago.
Over the next few months, we started to build a new friendship.  It was difficult for me because I was still unhappy with my life.  Since I would sing in the office it seemed that music was the safest topic. We exchanged private email addresses and discussed music, our favourite stations and bands. I began to value our time together.  During one of our many conversations, he explained his idea of music.  He revealed a bit of himself and said, “music is like sandpaper.”
After that statement a surge of creativity pumped through my brain. There was a flow of music and words on how it was like sandpaper.  I think I started the poem in his office.  I was bursting with excitement.  I took off and started to write.  I wrote a few versions of it on paper and then emailed it to him.  I had a tune in my head and I couldn’t do my work afterwards.  That night, I worked on it.  I created the poem and a separate song.  I didn’t know how to play an instrument well enough, so recorded only the voice part.  I emailed that to him too.
The next morning he gave me praise and appreciated my writing and singing.  Of course I wanted to share it; he inspired me just by being himself and partaking in a conversation.  I was truly grateful for his friendship.  He claimed he didn’t know that I could ‘really’ sing.  I swear he heard me in the office many times.  I made an agreement with him that I’ll buy him a coffee if I generate any money from it.  That’s all the acknowledgment that I’ll give him.  Well, I still owe him a coffee, but that can wait.
So, who inspires you?  Think about that for a while.  We really don’t realize how we affect others.  To think, just a simple turn of phrase can cause a burst in a mind of an unknown artist and guess what? We are all artists.

Brilliance of the Sun

I’m walking along the river banks with my feet in the mud.
The river is flowing downstream as I wave my hands.
The sun is shining through the trees bringing love and light to me.
The wind blows over head and the leaves are turning.

The sound of the water fills my heart and releases me.
I see the beauty of life and I sing a part of me.
The light is glistening on the surface and reflecting the wonder of my being.
The clouds are clearing and joy is rising deep within.

What does life have to offer us if we close our hearts?
How do you see the light if you’re standing in the dark?
Break free and connect with the earth and remember how to love
by watching the river flow and feeling the brilliance of the sun.

Know that we come from a source of love.
We can construct our new story and become one.
Turn to the elements of the earth and contribute to its beat.
Breathe with harmony with the world and revitalize our beings.

What does life have to offer us if we close our hearts?
How do you see the light if you’re standing in the dark?
Break away and connect with the earth and remember how to love
by watching the river flow and feeling the brilliance of the sun.

The Light of a Candle Changed My Perspective on Life!

I do most of my brainstorming in my bedroom.  Yes, I have an office in my apartment but there’s nothing like lying on my bed and reading a book, writing poetry or singing in front of my mirror.   “O Sole Mio.”  Spending time in my room is very comforting and relaxing for me.
One evening I was stressed out about a few things that I was experiencing, so I tried to do connect to my emotions and ground myself.  I couldn’t relax.  I lit a candle and turned off the bright over head lighting but I couldn’t really read what I was writing.  I didn’t have my laptop yet.  I ended up turning on my lamp by my bed.  I didn’t want to blow out the candle because it gave me a romantic feeling.  Yes... I enjoy candle light by myself.  Why not?  I moved the candle to my dresser by the mirror.
I was writing poetry, stretching and playing with my toes.  (Rubbing your feet is very therapeutic and it feels - GREAT!) I couldn’t settle my mind during my favourite past time.  I felt energy coming and going through my body.  I started to notice how these thoughts about love and light came into my mind.  I wanted to get up and move but at the same time I wanted to close my eyes.
I didn’t know I was completely distracted.  Something told me to look at my candle.  It was very bizarre.  I turned to look and there was nothing special about it.  I stared at it for a while, still nothing.  The flame was quite beautiful but really what is so special about this candle.  I went back to my toes.
Take a look at the candle!  My mind was pretty much demanding it by now.
I was sitting on my bed looking at the candle. Okay... I see the candle.  Now what?  I had a really nice candlestick holder.  I got it as a gift.  I don’t light candles very often and I really should do this more.  But, what am I missing?  I looked at the candle through my mirror.  That’s interesting how the shape seemed to change.  It was still the candle and holder but it seemed to be farther away.  Interesting...
I was still missing something.  Look at the shadow of the candle!  Past the candlestick against the wall was the shadow of the candle.  The light from my lamp help to cast a shadow.  Duh...  of course it does that.  So, I studied the shadow.  There was a shadow of the candlestick holder, a shadow of the wax and a shadow of the wick.  There was no shadow of the light.  What, the flame had no shadow casted on the wall.
There was no shadow casted from the light from the candle.  I just stared at its image.  What does that mean?  Why do I have to notice this?
When you add light to existing light it creates more - light.  Light itself has no shadow.  The shadow does not exist. You are light so share your light.  By sharing your light will attract more light.  Let out the inner light for others to see and shine so that it brings more peace.
Holy moly!
I jumped from my bed and called my teenagers into my room, “LOOK!!! Guys, look!!”
“Yah mom, that is a scientific fact.... blah, blah.”
They didn’t really say 'blah, blah.'  I was too excited to listen because that night the light of a candle changed my perspective on life.
